One of the Demons’ greatest athletes, a football star and a slugging baseball player, Emmons also developed powerhouse tennis teams coaching that sport while serving as an assistant football coach, and ending his career as head baseball coach from 1987-89 … a halfback and quarterback, he is on the Top 100 Demons of the Century football roster chosen in the 2007 centennial celebration … still holds baseball's single-season record for best batting average (.458) … shares the single-game mark for touchdown receptions (3 vs. McNeese, 1951) .. threw an 80-yard touchdown pass in 1949 to set a school record that stood for 20 years …a center fielder in baseball, he won two Gulf States Conference batting titles, .350 as a sophomore before his monster senior year … as tennis coach, he guided the men’s team to an NCAA Division I top 20 ranking and launched the women’s program, winning multiple conference titles.
