A quarterback on the football squad and a guard in basketball, Baucum threw the javelin and ran the 400-yard dash in track. He led his basketball team to the SIAA tournament twice against teams from the entire south.
A storied high school coach, Baucum is one of only two coaches in the state to win state titles in both football and basketball, performing that feat during 22 years of coaching at Springhill High School. At the time of his induction, he was also the only coach in the state ever chosen to serve as head coach for both the football and basketball squads in the annual SHSAA All-Star games.
Baucum, who coached Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow at Springhill served as supervisor of secondary education with the Webster Parish School Board.
