NATCHITOCHES – The timing was right from Northwestern State to add setter Cayman Sutton to its roster.
The Panola College transfer joined the Lady Demons roster in time for spring practice, making for the best situation for all involved.
"It's always ideal, if you're going to get a transfer, to get them in the spring so they're used to the systems we run," said coach
Sean Kiracofe, who is entering his fourth season at the helm of the NSU program. "They can learn all the little things – the ins and outs – and, specifically setters, can have that relationship with their attackers, so when you come in August for two-a-days, you're already hitting the ground running and progress from there."
Sutton, a 5-foot-8 White Oak, Texas, product, helped lead Panola to a pair of national tournament appearances in her two seasons with the Fillies. She has two years of eligibility at Northwestern State.
She topped 700 assists in both seasons while tallying 353 total digs, 117 kills and 54 aces. A two-time second-team all-conference selection, Sutton was an academic all-conference selection.
In two seasons, she helped lead Panola to a combined 63-11 record.
"She brings energy and competitiveness," Kiracofe said. "She competed for a Panola team that made long runs in the national championships. She just has that winning attitude to go along with her energy and competitiveness that will pay off and already has in practice. She's stepped up that level of fight when we get in there and compete."
Sutton lettered in four sports – volleyball, basketball, tennis and track -- at White Oak High School. She became the first female athlete in school history to participate in three different sports at the state level, doing so in volleyball, basketball and tennis.
That athleticism has translated to her first few weeks in a Northwestern State uniform.
"She's been great in the weight room from a strength standpoint," Kiracofe said. "She's always up there in sprints. She has speed and quickness. She adds to the athleticism on the roster. Combined with her competitiveness and fight, she has really stepped up the level of play in practice."
