COMMERCE, Texas – The Northwestern State Track & Field teams only sent a few competitors to the East Texas Invitational, but those participants shined on Saturday afternoon.
De'Shalyn Jones opened in the 400m for the first time this spring, and her long awaited debut did not disappoint, as the junior broke the school record of 53.63 with her mark of 53.61 to take gold.
Jones was not alone in her 400m effort, as fellow Lady Demons
Natashia Jackson and
Madison Morton joined her atop the podium with times of 55.60 and 58.17 to sweep the event.
For the Demons, throwers
Kyrin Tucker and
Cedric Paul put their talents on display in the discus, shot and hammer events.
Tucker took home wins in both the discus and the shot with distances of 157-01 and 54-07.50. The Coffeyville Community College transfer also placed second in the hammer thanks to his season-best toss of 167-01.
Paul continued to find the form that won him the Southland Conference shot put last year, as his mark of 54-01.25 was good for second overall.
The Franklin, LA, native also placed fourth in the hammer with his throw of 136-05.
The NSU Track & Field team will compete again at the LSU Alumni Gold event on April 22.
