LAKE CHARLES – In the first outdoor event of the year, the McNeese State Relays, Northwestern State track and field won the 2017 Bob Hayes Cup with a combined score of 252 points.
 
Both the Lady Demons and Demons took first in their respective fields, with the women's team scoring 133 points and the men scoring 119.

The field events spearheaded the NSU effort, as Lady Demon freshman Jasmyn Steels won both the long and triple jump with leaps of 18-10 and 39-2.50.
 
Joining Steels on the podium was Quanese Jones, who won the high jump with a mark of 5-7.
 
Also helping the Lady Demon cause was junior Kelsey Frank, who won the javelin final with a toss of 155-1.25.
 
On the men's side for the field events, a pair of sophomores, Jacorious Jeter and Ceaser Stephens, racked up points in the jumps for the Demons.

Jeter won the long jump with his distance of 22-8, while Stephens claimed second in the triple with a mark of 48-4.75.
 
Others contributing with wins were junior throwers Marquise Foster and Cedric Paul.
 
Foster won the hammer throw with a toss of 171-7.25, and Paul, the reigning Southland Conference Outdoor shot put champion, claimed the number one spot in the shot with his distance of 56-00.
 
Not to be outdone, the men and women's track teams put up six wins collectively.
 
The Lady Demons junior Kristina Vujanic won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.91, while senior Madison Morton finished closely behind to take second at 1:02.36.
 
Also going one-two were juniors Daeshon Gordon and Braneshia Payton in the 400 hurdles with marks of 14.15 and 14.17.
 
This has become a familiarity for the Lady Demons, as the pair claimed gold and silver in the 60H at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships.
 
Gordon and Payton pitched in for the Lady Demon 4x100 team as well, joining De'Shalyn Jones and Natashia Jackson to win the event in a time of 46.67.
 
The Lady Demons weren't done in the relays, as they claimed victory in the short medleys. The combination of Jessica Coleman, Tamara Style, Tia Elmore and Natashia Jackson clocked a winning time of 4:06.32.

On the men's side, it was the All-American 4x100 team picking up right where they left off as Amir James, Micah Larkins, Ty Shilling and Terrance Johnson, in for an injured George Flaviano, nabbed first with a time of 40.11.
 
Larkins, a sophomore, also claimed first in the 100 clocking in at 10.45, while Amir James took second at 10.57.
 
NSU's second meet will be on Wednesday at Louisiana Tech's Jim Mize invitational.
