BATON ROUGE --  Northwestern State opened the indoor track and field season on a positive note Friday as two Demons took home first place finishes in LSU's Purple Tiger Invitational.

NSU's Kyrin Tucker, a transfer from Coffeyville Community College (Kan.), dazzled in his first ever division one competition. Tucker's toss of 57-01.50 sealed a victory in the weight toss, while his effort of 53-02.75 in the shot put placed him fourth overall.

While Tucker might have been a surprise to some, junior Cedric Paul, the 2015 Southland Conference Indoor shot put winner, continued his dominance. Paul finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 51-07.25, and he narrowly missed the top spot in the shot put with a hurl of 54-01.25, good for second overall.

For fellow Demon Amir James, it was business as usual on the track. The junior sprinter out of Missouri City, Texas, blazed to a first-place finish in the 60 meter final with a time of 6.76, an improvement over last year's fifth-place result in the same event.

Joining James on the podium was Micah Larkins as the sophomore from Haughton took home third with a time of 6.81.

Tre' Evans, another newcomer for the Demons, also shined in his inaugural collegiate event. The freshman from Humble, Texas, tied for second in the high jump with a distance of 6-04.25.

Continuing his impressive cross country season, junior Josh Wilkins crossed the line fifth overall in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:47.07.

On the women's side, junior Gerianna Lyons placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 43-01.50, jumping four spots from her finish in last year's LSU Purple Tiger Invitational.

Destiney Meyers, the sophomore from Duncanville High School, found herself in the top ten in the shot put for the second straight year after her toss of 41-08.75 placed seventh.

The Lady Demons also had two top-seven performances in the triple jump as junior Fabriana Nation placed fifth with a leap of 38-2.24, and freshman Brooke Petkovich finished seventh after a mark of 37-1.25 in her first collegiate event.

Erin Wrozek, who was named to the All-Louisiana Cross Country honorable mention team, delivered a seventh-place effort in the 800 meters with a time of 2:26.90.
